But if it got thrown onto me, I wouldn’t consider it a punishme This is the type of book that a trendy, self-satisfied literature teacher would assign his or her students. But I certainly wouldn’t steer people away from it either. Story of the exploits of a dreamy soldier Drogo, who is sent to the outdoor fort of Bastiani, adjoining a desert, behind which the Tartars live.
However, Buzzati’s ending is a clever surprise that convinces the reader that hope is still possible. Assigned as a young lieutenant to a vast decaying fort long stripped of its strategic dewierto, Drogo first balks at, tartaos slowly succumbs to, the fort’s mysterious magnetism and the regulatory structure that governs it.

I would cautiously recommend it to them, warning them, of course, that it is one of those books that trendy, self-satisfied literature teachers like.

Same thing happened to Waiting for the Barbarianswhich is said to be inspired by Buzzati’s work.

He intends for his stay there to be brief, no more than four months, but many years later he is still there, dutifully following the regular routine and hoping for a moment of glorious battle. Towards the Drogo, an ailing old man, is taken away from the fort to a grey sea, representing Lks. It may even have benefited from that context, given that I, like its protagonist, was all but consumed by waiting.
Historically and geographically vague – no idea when it takes places or where, no political strings attached.
